Like all Genealogists, we are impatient to solve our ancestral riddles. A systematic approach to indexing the records can open the door to a more focused approach to our research and make our (often scarce) time more productive. The only way to accelerate this is with funds raised that can be used to pay for the copying, transliteration (where not done by volunteers) and other expenses associated with the placement of these records on the JRI-Poland database. We would need some 300 US dollars alone to get proper copies of the indexes made. Those of you who have done your own research in the records know how time-consuming and costly it can be to do them yourself. Money raised by the Shtetl CO-OP will be used to get photocopies of all index pages from the JGS of Toronto Copy Service (an all volunteer group organised in association with and support of the JRI-Poland project).

Prior to setting up the Shtetl CO-OP, I had already transcribed some 2,500 records (about 10% of the total) but felt that this all needed to be organised on a less ad-hoc footing than I had been able to achieve so far.

We will need further monies to accomplish other phases of the work. At this stage, it is not clear how much would be needed but there are undoubtedly  sufficient projects in the plan to make good use of any donations we can make as members of the Shtetl CO-OP.

There are some 80 Kalisz researchers listed on JewishGen's Family Finder. If each researcher contributes $10 we can get a good start on this project. However, we don't expect to reach  all researchers, nor do we expect that we will have 100% participation. Some researchers have limited funds and have offered instead to undertake some indexing. Please contribute what you can. We are dependent on the generosity of those who benefit from the database. You will be the beneficiary of your own gift.

Contributions in US Dollars should be made payable to "Jewish Records Indexing - Poland." Send check, bank draft or money order, or address your questions concerning donations to:
Sheila Salo, Treasurer, JRI-Poland, 5607 Greenleaf Road, Cheverly, MD 20785, USA. Full instructions for making donations are at http://www.jewishgen.org/JRI-PL/visa.htm.
