The list in the file below contains nearly 4500 distinct surnames/spelling variants taken from the Kalisz film indexes. The list is useful in suggesting alternative spellings that might be researched in various records. It also provides a checklist when transcribing the Russian era records. What is clear is that there were many different spellings, even by/about the same individuals and sometimes within the same record. My own anglicised name of FIFER appears as FAIFER, FAJFER, FAYFER, FAYFFER, FEIFER, FEIFFER, FEJFER, FEJFFER and FEYFER.
