| 11 June2000 | Cyrillic indexes from films
2041958, 2041959 and 2041960 were photocopied and sent to me by Jan Engel.
These cover the years 1878 to 1892. I am now looking for a small group
of people with experience of transliterating handwritten 19th century Cyrillic
script to help make these indexes readable and available on line. Offers
of help welcome.
Jan also supplied the Cyrillic indexes from the small town of Stawiszyn which is some 20km north of Kalisz and which had a significant Jewish population relative to its size. These films are numbered 2092166 and 2092177 and cover the years 1866-1879 (births) and 1862-1894 (BMD). A third film exists, 764034,covering the period 1826-1865 (non-Cyrillic script). In checking on this film in the FHC in London yesterday I was delighted to find the marriage record of my 3x great grandparents which then gave me the names of four of my 4 x great grandparents - a bonus I hadn't been looking for. Many thanks to Jan for leading me to this film. |

| 24 Apr 2000 | A thought: The 1865 birth index (film 743148) contains 528 names. This compares with 150-240 for other years. Was there was an "amnesty" of some sort for non-registered births? A change of clerk? Change of regulation? Political change? This might be a good place to look for births which should logically have been recorded in earlier years but which can't be located.(In my own FAIFER research so far, the oldest birth registration was at age 24 in 1846) | Sue Fifer |
